Perhaps the single most overlooked skill of being a leader is coaching and mentoring. Somehow the ever-present fires, meetings, and management tasks always seem to take precedence over the development of people and building your team’s bench strength. It’s not that leaders feel that developing talent is unimportant, rather, it is the one skill set that is typically outside of their comfort zones.
This critical gap creates a multitude of organizational challenges. In fact, the vast majority of employee-related issues (ie: Lack of engagement, High turnover, etc.) have a coaching and mentoring component.
